Following discussions with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), I'm pleased to share that we've secured a second and significantly larger allocation of bear-resistant trash cans.
Last year, we received 166 cans at no cost through a DEP grant. This year, we have been awarded an additional 370 cans. This expansion will allow us to fulfill all remaining requests from the waitlist, with a surplus that will be distributed through a lottery system.
All cans provided in this round will be 64-gallon models. Residents who requested a 96-gallon can will instead be offered the 64-gallon size.
As with last year, these cans are completely free for residents. The only requirement is that recipients complete a follow-up survey sent by the DEP after receiving their can.
For those who did not apply in the last round we’ll open up a second list which will be for any additional cans that show up this year or in subsequent years (no guarantees the grant is renewed). We will announce the second round of sign-ups soon.
