TO ENTER A PLEA OF NOT GUILTY: If you intend to plead "not guilty" to the offense to which you are charged, you must notify the Court Administrator of your intention at least SEVEN DAYS prior to your scheduled court date. A new court date may be assigned to you and important information involving court procedures will be explained to you.

COURT APPEARANCE REQUIRED: If "COURT APPEARANCE REQUIRED" is checked on your complaint/summons, you MUST appear in court on the date and time indicated, even if you wish to plead "guilty". If you intend to plead "not guilty" and you have an attorney, your attorney MUST contact the court prior to your court date. If you intend to plead "not guilty" but do not have an attorney, you MUST appear on the date given to enter your plea. A later trial date will be set.

TO PLEAD "GUILTY" AND PAY A FINE: If you wish to plead guilty and give up your rights to have a lawyer and a trial, you may do so provided "Court Appearance Required" is not checked on your complaint/summons. Listed below are the prescribed penalties for some of the more frequently charged motor vehicle offenses. If a penalty is not listed, you must call the above listed number to ascertain the amount of your fine. The summons can be mailed to the above address with a check or money order in the correct amount payable to "Chester Township Municipal Court". Payment must be received prior to the court date listed on the front of your summons.

If you fail to pay by the court date, a late fee of $10.00 will be assessed. If payment is not received by the next given date, a warrant for your arrest will be issued. This adds another $25.00 to your fine. Thirty days after a warrant is issued, the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles will automatically revoke your driver's license.

You are responsible for providing the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles with your correct address. The Municipal Court cannot change your address. Court notices will not be forwarded by the Post Office.

Please print the number of your summons on your check or money order. DO NOT MAIL CASH! A receipt is sent only if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment. Payment may also be made at the Violations Bureau located in the Chester Township Municipal Building, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.
