Conservation Groups

The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions, a nonprofit organization, has helped New Jersey's local environmental commissions and concerned citizens preserve and protect the state's natural resources since 1969. ANJEC's offices are located in Mendham.

Conservation Resources

Based in Chester Township, Conservation Resources Inc. is a non-profit organization providing financial and technical services to the conservation community in New Jersey.

Highlands Coalition

Chester Township is a part of the region known as the "Highlands". This area of environmentally sensitive land stretches from Southeastern Pennsylvania across North Central New Jersey and the Bear Mountain region of Upstate New York to Northwestern Connecticut. The Highlands Coalition is dedicated to preserving this region's valuable natural resources.

Highlands Council

The New Jersey Highlands Council is the official body formed to oversee the implementation of the Highlands Water Protection & Planning Act. Headquarters for the Council is located in Chester Township at the former Telcordia facility, now a Township park.

Morris County Open Space Program

Morris County has an aggressive open space acquisition program that is a model for the nation. Information on the Open Space, Farmland Preservation and Historic Preservation Programs can be accessed here.

Morris County Park Commission

The Morris County Park Commission owns many beautiful parks and facilities, including several here in Chester Township.

Morris Land Conservancy

Founded by Russell W. Myers in 1981, Morris Land Conservancy is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to preserving open space in the Greater Morris County area.

Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy works in cooperation with land owners to preserve sensitive lands world-wide. The New Jersey Offices are located in the Kay Environmental Center in Chester Township.

New Jersey Conservation Foundation

The New Jersey Conservation Foundation works to preserve land throughout New Jersey. Headquarters are located on Longview Road in Chester Township.

Trust for Public Lands

TPL pioneers new ways to finance parks and open space, promotes the importance of public land, and helps communities establish land-protection goals. TPL's New Jersey offices are located in Morristown.

Upper Raritan Watershed Association

The Upper Raritan Watershed Association works to preserve water quality and promote intelligent land use practices in the watershed of the North Branch of the Raritan River and its tributaries.

Consolidation Study

Chester Township & Chester Borough Consolidation Study

In 2008, officials in Chester Township and Chester Borough initiated an effort to explore the potential benefits of consolidating into a single municipality. Following a public hearing in February 2009 before a joint meeting of the Township and Borough councils, the governing bodies of the Township and Borough received approval from the State of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs' Local Finance Board to create a Joint Consolidation Study Commission and establish a process for a consolidation study.

The Commission, comprised of both Township and Borough representatives, is tasked with studying the feasibility and potential benefits of consolidating the municipalities into a single governmental unit.

The GEOCAST / 911 Reverse Directory is an emergency information system utilized by the Morris County Communications Center that dispatches calls for our and many other Morris County jurisdictions. The system will contact landline and cell phones in case of an emergency within a predetermined radius. In order to register your phone for this service, you must visit https://morriscounty.onthealert.com and sign up.

Twitter

On August 2, 2011, the Chester Township Police Department and the Chester Township Office of Emergency Management began using the social networking site, Twitter, to broadcast important public safety information to its residents. Through Twitter, residents will be able to receive real-time information regarding such things as road closures, special weather announcements and public safety bulletins. Most recently, Township police officers and emergency management officials utilized Twitter with great success during Hurricane Irene. During the storm, residents following the Township's page were able to receive real-time storm, weather and road closure information, not only from Township officials, but also from county and state emergency management officials as well. Township residents are encouraged to follow us on Twitter @CTOEM as well as the Morris County Office of Emergency Management @MCUrgent.

Senior Resource Center (SRC)

Serving Chester, Mendham, Long Valley and surrounding communities. The SRC provides assistance to people who are overwhelmed by the complexity of the issues and challenges of aging. Help is available in the following areas - information & referral, advocacy, support services, education & training and healthy seniors program.

All area seniors 60+ are invited on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Community Presbyterian Church (Chester Midday Friendship Center), 220 Main Street in Chester for a hot and nutritious lunch. Along with great food you can join in activities including bingo, movies, sing-alongs, arts and crafts, guest speakers, health screenings and educational programs. Habitat for Humanity ReStore

The Morris Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a discount building supply outlet where shoppers will find new and gently-used items from windows, doors, appliances and lumber to kitchens and home furnishings. The ReStore is open to the public and is your source for everything you need to renovate, beautify and improve your home or office. Save landfill space by giving your items a new purpose at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They accept: furniture, lumber, kitchen & bath cabinets, appliances, decorative hardware, doors, windows, lighting, paint & plumbing products. Home Medical Waste Disposal

Some hazards of improperly disposing of home medical waste may infect other people who come in contact with trash, unwanted or expired medicines could be harmful to children and adults and if found in the trash may be stolen for unregulated use. Antibiotics poured down the drain can kill beneficial microbes and bacteria in spectic systems. Click on "Home Medical Waste Disposal" (in blue) for more information on where to properly dispose of.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Disposal and/or recycling is easy and convenient. This facility is located on Gold Mine Road (off Route 206) in Mount Olive and is open on selected Tuesday (9:00-12:00), Friday (9:00-12:00) and Saturday (8:00-11:00) mornings. Please do not show up to the HHW Facility without first calling 973-829-8006 and making and appointment. Using the facility is available to Morris County residents and is also free of charge for most items. For more information about the materials accepted and not accepted please click on "Household Hazardous Waste Facility" (in blue). If you are not sure about a specific material and how to get rid of it please call 973-829-8006 for proper instructions. Some acceptable items are pesticides, oil-based paints, stains, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, pool chemicals, darkroom chemicals, computers and monitors, TV's. Some unacceptable materials are latex paint, empty containers, tires, construction waste, medical waste and explosives.

MCMUA Database of Facilities that Accept Electronics (Computers, TV's) in Morris County

Best Buy stores accept nearly everything electronic for free and Staples stores accept all but TV's. Residents may also make an appointment to drop off electronics at the MCMUA facility located on Gold Mine Road, off Route 206 by calling 973-829-8006.

Recycling Batteries

Figuring out how to dispose of batteries can be easy. Throw alkaline AA, C, D (non-hazardous and use-once) dry-cell batteries into the trash; recycle rechargeable batteries using call2recycle.org drop-off boxes (located at Lowes, Home Depot); and take all other types of batteries to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Gold Mine Road (off Route 206) in Mount Olive. Residents may bring lithium or round (button) batteries to the Municipal Building located at 1 Parker Road for recycling.
